1 Timothy

Our series through 1 Timothy is titled, “Guarding the Gospel” as Paul wrote to Timothy with these words, “O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you” (1 Timothy 6:20).  The epistle is a letter from the aged apostle Paul to a young pastor named Timothy who was the lead pastor of the church at Ephesus.  The church in that wicked city was experiencing some major problems.  These problems were centered in a heresy that was being taught in the church.  Timothy was charged with correcting other issues in the life of this church leaving us with a letter filled with information regarding the following:

–       A cult of heresy being taught in the church
–       Roles of women in the church
–       The responsibilities and qualifications of the offices of the church
–       The need for church discipline
–       The care of widows in the church
–       Materialism and how Christians should use wealth

Although Timothy was young and often timid, he had a task to accomplish and he was to do so under the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
